Located along a river, within a 100 year flood plain, the Lonavala Courtyard House serves as the country home for a prominent Mumbai family. Striking a balance between the traditional Hindu system of design, Vastu Shastra, and the homeowner’s personal style, the home is designed around an open sided courtyard; allowing a open plan with long vistas and cross ventilation. Adjacent to the courtyard’s open side, excavated earth is terraced and ramped to the 1st level, maintaining a connection to the landscape at upper levels . Along with entry and parking, the ground floor contains quarters for staff and their family. The first level functions as a guest flat and office, while the second level serves as the primary residential floor, connecting to the roof terrace above, and offering views towards the river and mountains valley beyond.
